Storage Solutions Needed

So I've been trying to figure out the best way to maximize the use of the boys closets as they have minimal storage shelves in them but are actually a decent size. Looking at wooden organizers online, they looked pretty pricey! I'm specifically looking at Koen's closet, he has a decent sized walk in closet. Has anyone just put a dresser in the closet? Or, what about a bookshelf in there for clothing? I'm trying to maximize the room in their rooms as well as how well their closets are used, because right now, there are no clothes in the closet. I want it to look nice and yet be functional (oh, and not expensive!). For some reason, when I get something on my mind, I need it done yesterday:)

    Hi Louise,
We put two bookshelves side by side in the kids closet so that all the clothes fit, they each get two shelves and now both sets of bunkbeds fit because there is no need for dressers. I am sure dressers would work too, but you need more room to be able to open the drawers. Happy decorating:)

  2. I have my dresser in my closet it works really well (I did re hang my clothing rod higher so that my shirts can hang above the dresser (you wouldn't have to do this as kids clothes are shorter).
I also have a short book shelf from Ikea in my closet.

  3. We switched to the open shelves idea for our boys as opening dresser drawers and squishing in jeans and sweat shirts seemed to require too much effort! We find this has helped to get clean clothes out of the laundry basket and worn clothes (but not dirty) off of the floor! In fact, we took the closet doors right off (opening them also was too much effort) and it makes the rooms seem bigger.

  4. The Expedit Bookcase is a goodie especially for little people clothes because you can add baskets to tidy it up or hide socks and undies! Plus there will most likely be space on the very top to put things also. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/40047675

Here are some funky hooks (scroll down to the middle, there are some animal heads etc.) that would also spice up any bland closet and hopefully get clothes off the floor?

  5. Heidi, that bookcase would've been perfect but the closet is 1" too small:) I'm thinking of this guy:

  6. we've got great storage from Ikea as well. It's all build out of wire, and it has draws that pull out and everything. It's great to put under clothes that are already hanging up in the closet.

  7. Very timely, I have the same issue, decent-sized under-used closets. I like the expedit idea, I'll have to get out my tape measure..

  8. Louise - zellers sells smaller expedit - girls each have one in their room w/ baskets for toys - but would work great in bedroom too. hmmmm.
