How to Frame Your Subject {Photography Tip}

I love seeing the world through lines, frames, light and candid moments. Everything is so visual these days with Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, blogging and more. Wouldn't you love it if your images could say more?

There are natural frames all around us and I love looking for them. When we include it in a photo, it provides depth and allows us to focus on our subject. Some examples are: windows, trees, doors, fences, people, playground equipment...let me show you some examples.

{Playground equipment provides many colourful frames.  It also looks beautiful in black and white.}

{This carousel frames Koen's smiling face.  I could've cropped more off of the right here.}

{This photo follows a few themes/rules and I love how both arches frame Nya and Gary}

{Bodies also provide frames. Nya's body forms one side, our feet the other, and the blur from my sweater forms the bottom}

{Greenery can provide amazing natural frames. Here the corn stalks surround the side and top of the photo really showing off this adorable subject }

{Peeking through plants and flowers is one of my favourites}

{Not only are they framed by the tunnel, they are framed by the horseshoe shape light around them.}

{Framed by Christmas Lights}

{Doors also provide a perfectly rectangular frame}

Try looking for frames around you this week and see how it looks in a photo!  I'd love to see what you come up with.

  5. Hey Louise - I tried commenting a few days ago but my comment got eaten up, so just wanted to pop back in and say thanks for sharing your expertise and talent so generously, and for the inspiration to pull my good camera back out. I love some of the frames that you came up with in these photos!
